Should You Invest in Mutual Funds or Stocks?

from: Maxx Trading Guides

With so many options available for the investors, it could be hard to determine which investments are right for you. One of the major keys to maintaining a long-term, stable and, most important, profitable portfolio, is to diversify your investments. This could include investing in both mutual funds and stocks. The plan of action is to research everything you can regarding both types of investments and try to maintain a good balance between the two.

Mutual funds are open-end funds not listed for trading on a stock exchange. They're created by companies who use their capital to invest in other companies. Mutual funds will sell their own new shares to investors. Capitalization isn't fixed with mutual funds and shares are typically issued as people desire to have them.

There are quite a few characteristics of Mutual funds that appeal to most investors. Mutual funds are professionally managed and employ professional managers to maintain all investing. These professional managers have many years of experiencea and are experts at selecting and evaluating investments for the fund they manage. The advantage for the individual investor is that the managers do all the buying decisions and selling decisions saves them from this responsibility.

Most mutual fund portfolios are very diversified, which is another important advantage, since the fund is invested in a wide variety of stocks. Diversification has an advantage because if a few stocks drop in price, the fund won’t be affected in a major way. To achieve diversification, investment is made in many different companies, plus it can also be accomplished by investing in a number of different industries. Thus diversifying through a mutual fund allows investors to reach a wider range of investments.

Also, you'll discover there are literally thousands of mutual funds available. Depending on what you prefer, you can invest in a mutual fund that covers an entire market or one that focuses on one or two industries. There are also mutual funds available that invest specifically in foreign markets. This is a convenient way to invest because because the mutual fund does all the record keeping as well as supplying you with all the forms you need to file your taxes.

Some finds even offer additional perks such as being able to write checks against the money market fund.

However, keep in mind that purchasing individual stocks has many attractive features as well. Once you've paid the brokerage fee, there's no ongoing fee associate with owning individual stocks, as opposed to mutual funds which charge a participation fee. There could be occassions where a mutual fund's fees totally eliminate the return that you were expecting for your investment.

When investing in individual stocks, an investor is able to be quite flexible and move with market if they want to. Mutual funds are stable, but this also makes them slow to react to the market. Individual stock investments can be traded quickly required and purchased just as quickly as well.

An investor also has greater level of control over their investing. Even though brokerage firms are involved, an investor can be more hands on with their stock purchases, which is impossible with mutual funds. If you're an investors who likes to know exactly where your money is going, you find this difficult with a mutual fund that holds shares in 50 or more companies. When investing in individual stocks, you can develop a larger relationship with the company you've invested in, which can create a sense of comfort because you know where your money is being used. You can track the activities of the company and truly feel as if you're truly a part of that company.

Therefore, investing in a balanced mix of mutual funds and single stocks usually works out best for a mosts investors. Those who don't want to take the time to research their stocks and prefer to let an expert handle the details will be more comfortable with mutual funds. On the other hand, investors who want higher participation with their investments will find individual stock investing the most attractive. As part of a long-term diversification strategy, it's often best to look into both and setup your portfolio with the ratio you're most comfortable with.
